For Further Research

 Greetings everyone!

I came across some of the resources which could help you in understanding and identifying the misleading and falsified statistics and news. As some of the falsified and misleading statistics are already created in a form of conclusions which used in the news,  I will include resources which would help you to identify these news. They are presented below:

FullFact organisation - https://fullfact.org

Fullfact is the website of the organisation which purpose is to prevent, check and expose misinformation in the news, as well as to educate and present trustworthy information and facts about some of the events. By typing the key word in the search on the website, you can find all of the trustworthy facts about the events or news. Additionally, the organisation has developed the technology that are able to identify the misleading in the claims made by politicians, public institutions, journalists and viral content. If they find the news made on falsified or misleading facts, they are trying to delete and refute these claims in the media. I suggest that this website would be useful in identifying the fake news and searching for trustworthy information across the media about the particular subject.

Truth or fiction? - https://www.truthorfiction.com

Truth or fiction is a organisation which focuses on observing the news articles for consideration on true/false scale and evidence search & observation. The page presents the news and fact-checks on different categories of news as politics, viral news, and more. Additionally, they have a special category of news marked as fake-news and disinformation, and they comprehend all of the fake news that was identified by the organisation.  The rating for the news could be classified as true, fiction, unknown, decontextualised, or variations thereof.  This website would be useful for looking up on the trending news and identify which are fake or not, and search for different categories of news.

LeadStories - https://leadstories.com

LeadStories is a website that helps users to fact-check of information in a various fields such as tech, politics, entertainment and more. It includes stories, images, photos, and posts with false information, which then fact checked, analysed, and corrected. Additionally, this site has a specific feeds for political affiliations (Democrats and Republicans). I recommend this site for you to identify the examples of misleading conclusions and fake news, which then could be practised based on the theory.

Although all of this sites are not specifically focused on misleading statistics, however, I suggest that this websites would be useful for you to find information on specific topics (FullFact), fact-check the information with explanations of it (Truth or Fiction), and examples of fake news for different categories (Lead Stories). This resources could be used for practice and research of specific topics, so, I recommend you visiting them.

Current Events I

As the topic of misleading statistics might be seen as non-significant to the media, however, it has a dramatic effect on the events happening now in the World. One of these events is the misleading claims about vaccination from Covid-19 that dramatically affect viewers/listeners of the content in the media, thus, influencing their decision over whether or not to get vaccinated.  Before we start, I do not want to make this post as somewhat blaming and rebuking, because in this blog we discuss misleading statistics, no more than that. Vaccination is an individual's choice and decision , and people should weigh all of the pros and cons before making one. However, all of the decisions should consider all of the possible, right, and trustworthy information  and misleading statistics is not that one. Right before the UK government have announced an extension of the UK Covid vaccination programme for 12- to 15-year-olds children, there was a controversy abo...

What the Experts Say II

The post made by Avanti Giradharan, "How the media used data to mislead you", presents the outlook on the ways of how the statistics can manipulate a person. Although we live in a technological advanced era, the current technologies provide the high possibility for data to be distorted and manipulated to warp your view. The article consists of 5 main parts, which are Misleading Graphs, Skewed Statistics, Crafted Headlines, Clickbait, and Confirmation bias.  The Misleading Graphs describes the way of how does the graph can be manipulated. It involves the part of scale distortion and cherry-picking. Scale distortion refers to the ways of how by manipulating with x- axis and y-axis the interpretation of statistics could be made, while cherry-picking is again, referring to decide whether to include some of the important data records. The Skewed Statistics refers to the problems, and it incorporates the parts about the neglect of variables and measurement of estimates. Neglect of...
